‘He stepped off into space, automatically widening his paws, claws outstretched, tail stiffened, lifting his head.  These movements slowed his free fall, then he leaned carefully into a wide arc, his brilliant eyes almost crossed in concentration.  He slid across their garden, past the dahlias, rising over the hedge, then soaring up as he came face to face with an over-grown rhododendron bush.  The evening air was cool and peaceful as he locked into a pure, straight, calculated climb, his whiskers twitching as the wind resistance began to increase.  He winded as he passed tow alarmed starlings flying home to roost.  As he topped the climb, he closed in his paws, tucked his head down and streamlined into descent onto the flat roof of a neighbour’s garage.  Shaking with relief, he sat down and began to lick back his ruffled fur.  He had done it…’
